JCR Commitee Minutes 17th May

These are the meeting minutes for Saturday 17th of May. We discuss the Gym equipment, JCR refurb, study spaces and a few other bits!

  • Gym Updates (May, Sports)
    • Women's only hours
      • Times have changed accordingly to reflect form feedback and usage - one session on a weekday (monday 6-8am) one in the weekend (saturday 1-3pm) 
    • Equipment replacement
      • It's to be decided if equipment will be replaced with the same item or something new. Inconclusive - QR code to be put in the gym and things on the instragram form to help narrow this down
      • Leg Press and Lat Pull down strong contenders to be replaced given their age
  • JCR refurbishments (Isabella, Pres)
    • Don’t want to change sofas (it would be a waste) but they will be spruced up!
    • Plants in the JCR(?) (Committee will water them)
    • Will get some old matric photos from Layfette to put in there (voted between matric and committee photos in favour of matriculation photos)
    • IKEA unit, tables and stalls are being installed 
      • Laura (Disabilities): furniture should be spaced in an accessible way.
        • All furniture will be movable to account for this
      • Progress flag on the wall could be a possibility (Declan, LGBTQ)
    • Wellbeing want to install board in butterfield  (Sophia and Chelsea, Gender Equalities) 
      • Might need to take down the DDS play posters  to facilitate this
      • We need to keep the cow. 
      • Might replace chalkboards as not used
  • H Staircase Lock: 
    • College says these are listed buildings, lots of hoops to jump through to get it to be installed
    • Cases need to be reported for action. If anyone in H has a problem, report to the porters. 
      • Bryan (internet) other staircases, such as E staircase are listed but have lock
      • Sophia: it is security and privacy issue (student facilities are accessible: shower bathrooms kitchen)
      • George (Comms) to speak to H staircase member: if problems report to porters. Isabella will take this to General Purposes again to see if College will take action
  • JCR officers asked to update their JCR website profiles (Isabella) 
    • Bryan confirms logins will be fixed for JCR members soon
  • Careers Liaison Update (Isabella and Owen)
    • They had a meeting with careers officer, info to be sent across with students
    • Download Handshake! 
  • Punt is back!! (Isabella)
    • Sophia (gender equalities): it's really tricky to get the paddock out of its storage spot, not much to do to fix this though
    • JCR (all students we hope) to choose the name via poll. Punty Mc Puntface and Virgo strong contenders
  • Study Spaces (Isabella)
    • Moved the study space in Bene’t place as its bigger and it gives more room for supervision spaces
    • Requests for electrical sockets in the rose garden and outside Butterfield will be passed to college. This might be a challenge as it’s likely listed. 
  • Officer updates (Isabella)
    • General purposes committee say no more home students storage
      • Will still be offered to international students
      • Isabella will raise accommodation for students with unstable home lives
      • Less storage decision has been made on the basis that it means more rooms available for NPR 
    • Stella (Treasurer) has joined the investment body
    • Committee list with corresponding JCR members roles to be sent out (what meetings we are meant to be at and where) 
      • Speak to IT to get agendas for meetings in person
  • Trees (Isabella)
    • Trees deferred for a year (we won’t discuss it)

Committee member Updates

  • Laura (Disabilities) - looking to get some schemes running to raise awareness of neurodivergence for supervisors
  • May (Sports) - People should call porters if men are in women’s only space
    • Ingio (Greens) an open and closed flip sign may help to address this issue. Isabella will look at getting this installed
    • Isabella:  discussed the wording around the women’s only hours being under consideration. Goal is to ensure the hours are inclusive and finding the best way to do that. More to come
  • Isabele and Leah (Bame officers) - looking to get speakers for Michaelmas term formal and plan on getting freshers engaged in BAME soc earlier
  • Welfare (Jamal) 
    • Jacks on the paddock soon, date tbd
    • Movie night got pushed back due to admin errors
  • Bryan (Internet) will do some work on websites to make large reimbursements more streamlined
  • Angel (Access) - academic discussions to be led by fellows rather than students in future but will get ambassadors in. 
    • Downing tik tok - try to get it student controlled not professionally made
      • Committee agrees it needs to highlight actual student life 
  • Stella (treasurer) we pay for a punt, but do we get the money back for it?
    • Isabella will ask about this
  • Declan (LGBTQ) - rainbow formal 18th June: last formal of the year! 
    • Potential Balloon arch?
  • Mia (Frep): Marriage formal great success, planning for Freshers week
    • Handbook pretty much done
    • Pronoun badges for freps
    • SCR and MCR outdoor movie screenings for Freshers week, possibility
  • Georgia and Jade (Ents) 
    • Garden Party tickets are available, people should buy tickets
      • Cost related to running out of Ents budget
  • Chesea and Sophia (Gender Equalities)
    • Someone set fire to a fan, people don’t know what to do in a fire. We need better fire training! 
      • Posters in the kitchen please: training is not too memorable as its on matriculation day
    • Housekeeping to ensure period products in both JCR bathrooms
    • 1 period cup left if anyone wants it 
    • Speaker event for end of term
  • George (Comms)
    • Will look to reduce clutter in inboxes at information management committee
    • Student raised concerns about tourism: college is adding extra signage to make it clearer, especially outside the library that there are people revising 
    • Students raised concern that when applying as an engineer they were told they’d get four years of accommodation, but later informed it is now only 3 years - can we do something about this?unknown node
      • Isabella will raise this with college, the general purposes committee had decided on this a while ago but we will try. 
  • Green (Joe and Inigo)
    • Work with MCR green officer
    • Green bins are disappearing 
      • Every house was meant to have 3 bins, but they aren’t there 
      • Can we keep our waste separate (recycling and general)
      • Possibly look at installing cooling system in the gym
  • AASMCO (Owen)
    • Sending out an email soon with details from career liaison meeting
